PLA loves soaking up moisture out of the air—much more than most makers realize. Even one humid week can turn a great‑quality spool into a source of popping noises, bubbly layers, messy stringing, and random nozzle clogs. The good news? You don’t need an expensive commercial dryer to fight it. Just build 5 small daily habits.
- Seal it right after use When you finish printing, slip the spool back into its original bag. Toss in the included desiccant pack and zip it tight. Don’t leave filament sitting open on your printer overnight.
- Use a dry box for long‑term storage For spools you won’t touch for weeks, a simple dry‑box with rechargeable desiccant works wonders. Low humidity = happy PLA.
- Dry damp filament before printing If your PLA already feels wet, dry at 50 °C for 4–6 hours. Never use temperatures over 50 °C—you risk softening and ruining the spool.
- Watch your room humidity If your workspace regularly hits above 60% RH, your filament will soak up water fast. A cheap hygrometer helps you track conditions.
- Keep spools off cold floors Cool surfaces pull moisture out of warm air. Store your filament rack up off the ground.
