The Best PLA Print Settings for Miniatures and Tabletop Models

Resin gets all the miniature attention, but PLA can print stunning tabletop minis—if you use the right settings. Here's our proven setup for detailed, paintable PLA miniatures.

Layer height: 0.08–0.12 mm This is where the detail happens. 0.12 mm is a good balance of detail and speed. For display-quality minis, go 0.08 mm. Yes, it takes longer—but the difference in face details and texture is dramatic.

Nozzle: 0.4 mm standard works, 0.2 mm for detail A 0.4 mm nozzle can print 0.12 mm layers just fine. If you want maximum detail (weapons, faces, jewelry), swap to a 0.2 mm nozzle and print at 0.06–0.08 mm layers.

Temperature: 195–205 °C Lower temperature = less stringing, sharper details. Arkforge PLA prints beautifully at the lower end of its 190–230 °C range. Start at 200 °C and drop 5 degrees if you see stringing.

Print speed: 30–50 mm/s Slow down. Miniatures have tiny features that need precise extrusion. 40 mm/s for walls, 30 mm/s for details. Your printer can do 50–200 mm/s, but minis aren't the place for speed.

Cooling: 100% fan Max cooling from layer 1. PLA miniatures need rapid cooling to hold fine details. If your printer has a part cooling fan, run it at 100%. Add an external fan if overhangs sag.

Supports: tree supports, everywhere Miniatures have overhangs everywhere—arms, weapons, cloaks, hats. Use tree supports at 5–8% density with 0.2 mm Z-distance. They touch the model less and leave smaller marks.

Infill: 5–10% Minis don't need strength. 5–10% infill is plenty. More infill = more weight, more plastic, longer print time—no benefit for display pieces.

Post-processing for painting

  1. Remove supports carefully with flush cutters
  2. Sand support marks with 400–600 grit
  3. Prime with gray or white primer
  4. Paint in thin layers
  5. Seal with matte clear coat

Pro tip: Orient your mini at a 15–30° angle on the build plate. This reduces layer lines on the face and improves detail visibility.

Arkforge PLA's consistent 1.75±0.03 mm diameter means steady extrusion at slow speeds—no under-extrusion on those tiny details.
