Do You Really Need a Heated Bed for PLA?

One of the most common beginner questions: do I need a heated bed for PLA? The short answer: it helps, but you don't always need one.
PLA has low shrinkage compared to ABS or PETG, which means it's less likely to warp. On a clean glass, PEI, or BuildTak surface, many makers print PLA successfully with no bed heat at all—especially for small models.
That said, a heated bed improves first-layer adhesion dramatically. The recommended bed temperature for Arkforge PLA is 50–60 °C. Warmth keeps the bottom layer soft just long enough to bond firmly to the build plate, reducing edge curling on larger flat prints.
When you can skip the heat:
- Small prints under 5 cm
- Clean, textured PEI sheets
- Enclosed printers with stable ambient temperature
When you definitely want heat:
- Large flat parts (boxes, panels, frames)
- Smooth glass beds
- Drafty or cool workshop environments
A pro tip: If you're using a heated bed, let it preheat for 2–3 minutes before printing. A bed that reads 60 °C on the sensor but is actually 50 °C at the surface causes poor first-layer adhesion.
