How to Fix PLA Layer Separation (Not Just Weak Prints)
Share
Layer separation isn't just "weak prints"—it's when layers visibly peel apart or the print snaps cleanly between layers. The causes are specific, and the fixes are different too.
What causes layer separation Layers must melt into each other. If the plastic cools before bonding, you get separation—not just weak parts, but visible delamination.
Fix 1: Raise nozzle temperature aggressively If weak prints need 205 °C, separation needs 215–225 °C. Hotter plastic penetrates deeper into the previous layer. Arkforge PLA's range goes up to 230 °C, so you have room. Test at 220 °C and go up if needed.
Fix 2: Turn off cooling fan completely This is the big one. 100% fan cools each layer instantly—before it can bond. For layer separation, set fan to 0% until layer 5, then 30–50%. The initial layers stay hot enough to fuse properly.
- Overhangs might sag slightly, but layers will bond
- For prints with lots of overhangs, use tree supports instead of cooling
Fix 3: Slow down significantly Print at 30–50 mm/s instead of 100+. Slow extrusion means each layer has time to melt and bond before the next one cools. This is essential for parts that need strength.
Fix 4: Dry the filament Moisture creates gaps. Wet PLA boils inside the hotend, preventing proper layer fusion. Dry at 50 °C for 4–6 hours. This is especially important if you print in a humid environment.
Test your fix Print a 20 × 20 × 40 mm cube. Let it cool, then try to snap it between layers. If it bends before breaking, layer adhesion is good. If it snaps cleanly between layers, keep adjusting.
When to accept limits PLA is inherently more brittle than PETG. Some layer separation on large, tall prints is normal even with perfect settings. If you need maximum inter-layer strength, consider PETG or ASA for functional parts.
Separation = layers didn't melt together. Weak prints = layers bonded but material is brittle. Different problems, different fixes.
Start with filament that bonds well. Try Arkforge PLA.
Happy printing!
