How Much PLA Do You Actually Need? Calculating Filament for Your Prints

Ever hit "print" and wondered: do I have enough filament left? Running out mid-print is frustrating, and overbuying ties up money in spools you don't need. Here's how to estimate your PLA usage accurately.

Start with your slicer Every modern slicer (Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio) shows estimated filament length and weight before you print. Check the preview—this is your most accurate number. A typical benchy uses about 12–15g. A large figurine can use 80–150g.

Understand spool capacity A standard 1 kg spool of 1.75 mm PLA contains approximately 315 meters of filament. That's enough for roughly:

  • 60–80 benchy models
  • 15–20 medium figurines
  • 8–12 large functional parts
  • Countless small organizers and clips

Calculate by volume If you need a quick estimate: PLA density is about 1.24 g/cm³. Multiply your print's volume (cm³) by 1.24 to get grams. Add 10–15% for infill, supports, and skirt.

Watch your spool weight Most spools weigh 180–250g empty. Weigh a partial spool, subtract the empty spool weight, and you know exactly how much filament remains. No guessing.

Practical rule If a project needs more than 700g, start with a fresh spool. The last 50–100g on a spool is where tangles and feeding issues are most likely—don't risk a 10-hour print on a nearly-empty roll.

Every Arkforge PLA spool is a full 1 kg / 315 m, vacuum-sealed and consistently wound, so you always know exactly what you're working with.
