How to Get a Smooth Matte Finish on PLA Prints

Glossy, shiny PLA prints look cheap. A clean matte finish makes your prints look professional, store-bought, and ready for display. Here's how to get it consistently.

1. Print slightly cooler High temperatures (220–230 °C) produce glossy, shiny surfaces. Drop to 195–205 °C for a more matte finish. Arkforge PLA prints beautifully in this range—you get matte surfaces without sacrificing layer adhesion.

2. Max out cooling 100% part cooling fan = faster solidification = matte finish. Enclosed printers may need extra airflow. If your overhangs suffer, add a small external fan.

3. Use smaller layer height 0.12–0.16 mm layer height creates smoother surfaces than 0.2 mm. The tradeoff is longer print time, but for display pieces it's worth it.

4. Post-process for perfection

  • Sand with 200 → 400 → 600 grit sandpaper
  • Wipe with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust
  • Apply a matte clear coat (spray or brush-on) for a uniform finish
  • For advanced smoothing: try a vapor polish with ethyl acetate (use in a well-ventilated area)

5. Choose the right filament Some PLA formulations are naturally more matte than others. Arkforge PLA is formulated for a clean, low-gloss surface straight off the printer—less post-processing needed.

Quick test: Print a temperature tower from 190–230 °C. You'll see the finish shift from matte to glossy as temperature rises. Pick the look you like best.

Matte finish isn't just about looks—it also hides layer lines and minor imperfections better than glossy surfaces.

Start with naturally matte Arkforge PLA.

Happy printing!
