How to Store PLA Filament Long-Term (And Keep It Print-Ready)

A good filament spool can last years—or go bad in weeks if stored wrong. Here's how to keep your PLA fresh for the long haul.

The enemies of PLA: moisture, dust, and UV light. Moisture causes popping and stringing. Dust wears your nozzle. UV light makes PLA brittle and discolored. Fight all three with the right storage.

1. Vacuum-seal with desiccant Every Arkforge PLA spool ships this way for a reason. When you open one, keep the bag and silica pack. Re-seal spools between prints.

2. Use a dry box for active spools A simple plastic tub with rechargeable desiccant keeps humidity under control. Aim for below 40% RH inside. You can even print your own spool holder that fits inside.

3. Keep it cool and dark Store filament away from windows, heaters, and direct sunlight. A closet or cabinet works perfectly. Avoid temperatures above 30 °C for long periods.

4. Label and rotate Mark the opening date on each spool. Use older spools first—PLA gradually degrades even when sealed, though it takes months to matter.

5. Revive damp spools If a spool has absorbed moisture, dry it at 50 °C for 4–6 hours before printing. That's the official drying temperature for Arkforge PLA.

Good storage isn't expensive, but it saves you from failed prints and wasted material. Treat your filament well, and it treats you back.
