Multi-Color 3D Printing with PLA: A Beginner's Guide
Share
Single-color prints are great, but multi-color takes your projects to the next level. You don't need an expensive printer to do it. Here are 3 methods, from easiest to advanced.
Method 1: Manual filament swap (pause at height) The simplest way to get two colors. Print the bottom in one color, pause the printer, swap filament, and resume in a second color.
- Best for: Two-tone designs, text on top of a base, layered color effects
- How: Use your slicer's "pause at layer" or "filament change" feature
- Tip: Design your model so the color change happens at a natural boundary line
Method 2: Color change at layer (M600) Most modern printers support the M600 gcode command, which automatically pauses, retracts, and prompts you to change filament. No manual babysitting needed.
- Best for: Logos, text, decorative layers
- How: Insert M600 at the layer height where you want the color to change
- Works with any single-extruder printer
Method 3: Dual extrusion / AMS Two print heads or an automatic material system lets you print multiple colors in a single layer—no pausing required.
- Best for: Complex multi-color models, miniatures, detailed logos
- Requires: Dual-extruder printer or AMS (Bambu, Prusa MMU, etc.)
- Tip: Use a purge tower or prime pillar to clean the nozzle between color switches
PLA is perfect for multi-color All 12 Arkforge PLA colors share the same print settings: 190–230 °C, 50–60 °C bed, 1.75±0.03 mm diameter. When you swap colors mid-print, you don't need to adjust temperature or flow—just change the spool and go.
Start simple Begin with a manual color swap on a small test print. Try printing a keychain with your initials in a contrasting color. Once you're comfortable, move to M600 automatic changes.
Pro tip: For clean color transitions, print a small purge block next to your model. It catches the old color mixed with new, so your actual print gets pure color.
With 12 colors to choose from, the combinations are endless.
