PLA Bed Surfaces Compared: Glass, PEI, BuildTak, and More

Your build surface determines whether your PLA print sticks—or slides off into a mess mid-print. Here's how the most popular options compare.

Glass (the classic)

  • Adhesion: Good when clean, excellent with hairspray or glue stick
  • Cost: $10–20, lasts years
  • Pros: Smooth bottom finish, easy to clean, cheap
  • Cons: Prints release only when cool; can crack if heated too fast; needs adhesive for large prints
  • Best for: Smooth-bottomed parts, prototypes, budget setups

PEI sheet (the favorite)

  • Adhesion: Excellent for PLA at 50–60 °C bed temp
  • Cost: $15–30 for a sheet
  • Pros: Prints stick when hot, release when cool—no adhesive needed; textured PEI hides layer lines
  • Cons: Can scratch; needs occasional IPA cleaning; smooth PEI can be too aggressive for small parts
  • Best for: Daily printing, all PLA types, most makers

BuildTak / textured sheets

  • Adhesion: Very good, consistent
  • Cost: $10–20 per sheet
  • Pros: Matte textured finish on print bottom; works without adhesive
  • Cons: Wears out after 3–6 months; can tear if you pry prints off too hard
  • Best for: Functional parts, consistent matte finish

Magnetic flexible sheets

  • Adhesion: Depends on surface (usually PEI or BuildTak on top)
  • Cost: $20–40
  • Pros: Flex the sheet and prints pop off; easy to swap surfaces
  • Cons: Magnetic base can lose strength over time; slight flex can affect flatness
  • Best for: Makers who print frequently and want easy removal

Painter's tape (blue tape)

  • Adhesion: Good for small prints
  • Cost: $5 a roll, replace every 5–10 prints
  • Pros: Cheapest option, easy to apply
  • Cons: Textured bottom finish; tape can lift at edges; not great for large prints
  • Best for: Beginners, temporary fixes, testing

Our recommendation Start with PEI. It's the best all-around surface for PLA—reliable adhesion, easy removal, and a clean finish. Pair it with Arkforge PLA's low-warp formula and you'll get perfect first layers at 50–60 °C every time.
