PLA First Layer: 5 Settings for Perfect Bed Adhesion

The first layer is the most important layer of any 3D print. Get it wrong, and the whole print fails. Get it right, and the rest is easy. Here are 5 settings that guarantee perfect PLA bed adhesion.

1. Bed temperature: 50–60 °C This is the recommended range for Arkforge PLA. A warm bed keeps the first layer soft just long enough to bond firmly. For large flat prints, lean toward 60 °C. For small detailed prints, 50 °C works fine. Let the bed preheat for 2–3 minutes before printing.

2. Nozzle height: the paper test A sheet of paper should slide between nozzle and bed with slight resistance. Too high = filament doesn't squish and doesn't stick. Too low = filament gets squished too thin, causing a rough first layer and potential clog. Re-level every 10–15 prints or after changing build surfaces.

3. First layer speed: 20–30 mm/s Slow down! Your normal print speed of 50–200 mm/s is too fast for the first layer. At 20–30 mm/s, the filament has time to press into the bed and bond. Most slicers have a separate "first layer speed" setting—use it.

4. First layer flow: 100–110% Slightly over-extruding the first layer (105–110%) pushes more plastic into the bed surface, improving grip. Don't go above 110%—you'll create an elephant's foot that's hard to remove.

5. Skirt or brim

  • Skirt: A line around the print (not attached). Purges the nozzle and lets you check adhesion before the real print starts. Use for most prints.
  • Brim: Attached to the print base. Adds surface area for parts with small footprints or tall narrow shapes. Use when adhesion is tricky.

Bonus tip: Clean your bed! Finger oil, dust, and old filament residue kill adhesion. Wipe PEI sheets with isopropyl alcohol. Glass beds benefit from a thin layer of hairspray or glue stick.

With these 5 settings dialed in, your PLA prints will stick firmly and release cleanly when cooled.

Arkforge PLA's low-warp formula and consistent 1.75±0.03 mm diameter make first-layer success predictable.
