The Truth About PLA Layer Adhesion: 3 Fixes for Weak Prints
Share
ou printed a beautiful part—then it snapped between layers like a stack of cards. Poor layer adhesion is one of the most frustrating PLA problems, but it's almost always fixable.
Why layers separate Each layer needs to melt slightly into the one below it. If the plastic cools too fast, or doesn't flow hot enough, layers bond weakly and split under stress.
Fix 1: Raise your nozzle temperature If you're printing at the low end (190 °C), try bumping to 205–215 °C. Hotter PLA flows more and bonds deeper between layers. Arkforge PLA handles up to 230 °C safely, so you have room to experiment. Just watch for increased stringing.
Fix 2: Reduce cooling fan speed 100% fan cooling is great for overhangs, but it can cool layers too fast for strong bonding. Try 70–80% fan for structural parts. You'll get slightly less crisp details, but much stronger layer bonds.
Fix 3: Slow down your print speed Printing at 150–200 mm/s leaves less time for each layer to bond. Drop to 50–80 mm/s for critical structural parts. Slower printing gives the plastic more time to melt into the previous layer before cooling.
Pro tip: For parts that need strength, use 4+ perimeters and 20–30% infill. More walls = more layer contact area = stronger part.
Layer adhesion is a balance between heat, cooling, and speed. Tweak one setting at a time, and you'll find the sweet spot.
