PLA Nozzle Size Guide: 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 mm Explained

The 0.4 mm nozzle is standard, but it's not always the right choice. Different nozzle sizes solve different problems. Here's when to use which.

0.4 mm (the default)

  • Best for: 90% of PLA printing
  • Layer height: 0.12–0.28 mm
  • Speed: 50–150 mm/s
  • Pros: Great detail, widely available, works with all PLA, easy to find replacement nozzles
  • Cons: Slower for large parts, not the strongest per layer This is the nozzle you get out of the box. Stay here until you know what you need.

0.2 mm (detail specialist)

  • Best for: Miniatures, jewelry, fine text, highly detailed models
  • Layer height: 0.06–0.12 mm
  • Speed: 30–60 mm/s
  • Pros: Crisp detail, visible layer lines almost disappear
  • Cons: Clogs more easily, slow, requires clean dry filament Use this only when detail matters more than speed. Print at 195–205 °C to avoid under-extrusion.

0.6 mm (productivity upgrade)

  • Best for: Functional parts, prototypes, larger prints
  • Layer height: 0.2–0.4 mm
  • Speed: 100–200 mm/s
  • Pros: 2–3x faster than 0.4 mm, stronger walls, fewer clogs
  • Cons: Less detail, bigger layer lines, requires good cooling Print at the upper end of Arkforge PLA's range (210–225 °C) to push more plastic.

0.8 mm (production workhorse)

  • Best for: Enclosures, vases, large functional parts
  • Layer height: 0.3–0.5 mm
  • Speed: 150–200+ mm/s
  • Pros: Extremely fast, very strong, minimal clogs
  • Cons: Visible layer lines, not for detail work Great for parts where strength and speed beat aesthetics.

Switching nozzles Keep 3–5 spare 0.4 mm nozzles. Keep one each of 0.2 and 0.6 mm for specialized jobs. When switching sizes, recalibrate flow rate—bigger nozzles push more plastic.

Start with 0.4 mm. Once you're printing reliably, add a 0.6 mm for big parts and a 0.2 mm for details. That covers 99% of needs.

Arkforge PLA's consistent 1.75±0.03 mm diameter works through every nozzle size—no clogs from inconsistent filament.
