PLA Support Settings: How to Print Supports That Remove Cleanly

Overhangs and bridges are part of 3D printing, but supports shouldn't leave your model looking like it survived a shark attack. With the right settings, PLA supports remove cleanly with minimal cleanup.

1. Support density: 5–15% is enough You don't need solid supports. For PLA, 5–10% density works for most overhangs. Use 15% for large, heavy support areas. Higher density = harder removal and more material waste.

2. Choose the right pattern

  • Lines / Zigzag: Fastest to print, easiest to remove. Best for simple supports.
  • Grid / Triangles: More stable for tall supports, slightly harder to remove.
  • Tree supports: Best for complex models (figurines, miniatures). They touch the model less and leave smaller marks.

3. Set Z-distance correctly This is the gap between support and model. Too close = supports fuse to the print. Too far = poor overhang quality.

  • For PLA: 0.15–0.25 mm Z-distance
  • Start at 0.2 mm and adjust

4. Lower support temperature Print supports 5–10 °C cooler than your model. If you print the model at 205 °C, set supports to 195–200 °C. Cooler supports are more brittle and snap off cleanly. Arkforge PLA handles this range easily within its 190–230 °C window.

5. Use a support interface A 1–2 layer dense interface on top of supports creates a smoother underside surface. Set interface density to 80–90%. It uses slightly more material but dramatically improves overhang finish.

Removal technique

  • Let the print fully cool before removing supports
  • Use flush cutters or a small knife for tight spots
  • Sand remaining marks with 200–400 grit
  • For visible surfaces, a quick coat of primer hides any remaining support marks

Pro tip: If supports are fusing to your model, increase Z-distance by 0.05 mm and lower support temperature by 5 °C. That fixes 90% of removal problems.

Arkforge PLA's consistent flow means your supports print predictably—no random fused spots from diameter variation.
