PLA vs ABS: Which Filament Should You Learn First?

If you're buying your first spool, you've probably seen PLA and ABS everywhere. Both are popular FDM filaments—but they're worlds apart for beginners. Here's the honest comparison.

PLA: the beginner's friend PLA prints at 190–230 °C, barely warps, smells mild (a slight sweet odor), and works on unheated beds. It's rigid, detailed, and forgiving. Stringing is manageable. Clogs are rare with good filament. You can print on a $200 open-frame printer and get great results.

ABS: the advanced material ABS needs 240–260 °C nozzle and a heated bed at 90–110 °C. It warps aggressively on large prints. It requires an enclosed printer. It releases fumes that need ventilation. It's stronger and more heat-resistant, but it punishes small mistakes.

Quick comparison

  • Ease of use: PLA wins by a mile
  • Strength & heat resistance: ABS wins
  • Warping: PLA almost zero, ABS high
  • Odor & safety: PLA mild, ABS needs ventilation
  • Detail & surface finish: PLA sharper
  • Post-processing: ABS vapor-smooths beautifully, PLA sands well

Our recommendation: start with PLA Learn your printer, master leveling, understand your slicer, and build confidence with PLA. Once you can print a perfect benchy, a detailed figurine, and a functional bracket in PLA—then try ABS. You'll have the skills to handle its quirks.

Most makers spend 80% of their time on PLA anyway. It's the material that gets you printing today, not next month.
