PLA Warping: Is It the Filament or the Printer?
Share
PLA is supposed to be the low-warp filament. So when corners curl on a large print, where do you look first? Here's how to diagnose the real cause.
Is it the filament? Quality PLA warps minimally. But low-quality filament can still cause issues:
- Inconsistent diameter → uneven cooling and shrinkage
- Moisture → internal stress as moisture boils
- Poor raw material → higher shrinkage rate
Test: Print the same model with a known-quality PLA. If warping disappears, your filament was the issue. Arkforge PLA is formulated for low warpage and ships dry.
Is it the settings? Most PLA warping is settings-related:
- Bed too cold (below 50 °C): First layer doesn't bond firmly
- Fan too strong too early: Rapid cooling = more shrinkage
- Print speed too fast: Uneven layer cooling
- No brim: Large flat prints need surface area to hold on
Fixes: Bed at 50–60 °C, fan off for first 2–3 layers, brim on large prints.
Is it the printer/environment?
- Drafts: A window AC or fan blowing on the print causes uneven cooling
- Cold room: Below 20 °C ambient temperature = more warping
- Unlevel bed: Corners that don't stick lift easily
- No enclosure: Large prints cool too fast
Fixes: Enclose the printer, block drafts, maintain room temperature above 20 °C.
The diagnostic flowchart
- Dry filament at 50 °C for 4 hours. Still warping?
- Raise bed to 60 °C, add brim. Still warping?
- Disable fan for first 3 layers. Still warping?
- Enclose the printer. Still warping?
- Try a different spool. If it prints flat, your old filament was bad.
Most likely cause In 9 out of 10 cases, PLA warping is a combination of: no brim + cold bed + early fan. Fix those three and 90% of warping disappears.
PLA is not warping-free—it's warping-resistant. Large prints always need help. Give them a brim, a warm bed, and still air.
Start with filament that wants to stay flat. Try Arkforge PLA.
Happy printing!
