PLA Filament Recycling: Can You Reuse Failed Prints and Supports?
Share
Every maker accumulates a box of failed prints, support material, and test scraps. Can you recycle PLA? The answer is yes—but not the way you might think.
Can you melt PLA back into filament? Technically yes, practically no for most makers. Turning scrap PLA back into consistent 1.75 mm filament requires an extruder machine ($300–800), a shredder, and careful temperature control. Home-made filament usually has inconsistent diameter and impurities, causing clogs and poor prints. For most people, it's not worth the investment.
What you CAN do with PLA waste
1. Repurpose as raw material
- Melt scraps in a mold (oven at 180–200 °C) to make custom shapes, coasters, or pen holders
- Use a plastic injection molder (like the Injectinator) to cast small parts
- Break into small pieces and use as filler for concrete or resin projects
2. Donate or sell
- Schools, maker spaces, and art centers often accept clean PLA scrap for projects
- Some makers buy bulk PLA scrap for recycling experiments
- Check local Facebook groups or Reddit's r/3Dprinting
3. Industrial recycling PLA is technically compostable, but only in industrial facilities (not home compost). Some recycling centers accept #7 plastics (PLA falls here). Call ahead—many still don't process PLA separately.
4. Reduce waste at the source This is the most effective strategy:
- Use tree supports instead of grid supports (less material)
- Set infill to 10–15% for display prints
- Print a calibration cube before big projects to verify settings
- Use dry filament (wet filament = more failed prints = more waste)
What NOT to do
- Don't put PLA in home recycling—it contaminates the batch
- Don't put PLA in home compost—it won't break down without high heat
- Don't burn PLA—it releases fumes and is a fire hazard
The honest truth: The greenest option is to generate less waste. Start with quality filament, calibrate your settings, and you'll have far fewer failed prints to recycle.
Arkforge PLA's consistent quality means fewer failed prints and less waste. Every 1 kg / 315 m spool goes further when you're not reprinting failures.
