How to Store Filament Without a Dry Box (Cheap Alternatives)
Share
Dry boxes are great—but they're not the only option. If you're not ready to spend $30–50 on a dedicated filament storage box, these cheap alternatives work surprisingly well.
1. Ziplock bags + desiccant The simplest solution.
- Keep the original filament bag after opening
- Squeeze out air and seal tightly
- Add fresh desiccant (rechargeable silica gel packs)
- Write the opening date on the bag Cost: $0 if you keep the original bag. This is what every maker should do as a baseline.
2. Plastic storage tub A $5–10 airtight food storage container works as a mini dry box.
- Get one that fits your spools standing up
- Add rechargeable desiccant packs
- Throw in a cheap hygrometer to track humidity
- Seal the lid between prints Works as well as a $30 filament dry box for one or two spools.
3. Vacuum bags Food vacuum sealer bags (the kind for sous vide) work great.
- Place spool in bag, add desiccant
- Vacuum seal
- When you need to print, open a corner, feed filament through, re-seal
- More reliable than zip bags for long-term storage
4. Rechargeable desiccant The key ingredient. Buy a pack of rechargeable silica gel canisters ($10–15 for a set). Recharge in the oven at 120 °C for 4 hours when they change color.
- Better than single-use packets
- Lasts for years
- Works in any container
5. In-printer dry box If you print with a spool on the printer, put a small desiccant pack next to the spool. Even an open-top box around the spool reduces moisture absorption during printing.
What doesn't work
- Just leaving the spool on the printer
- Storing in a garage or basement (high humidity)
- Using cat litter as desiccant (it doesn't work for filament)
The goal is simple: keep filament below 40% RH when not printing. You don't need fancy equipment—just airtight storage and desiccant.
Every Arkforge PLA spool arrives vacuum-sealed with fresh desiccant, so your storage starts strong. Just keep it that way between prints.
