The Ultimate PLA First Layer Troubleshooting Guide
Share
First layer problems are the most common—and most frustrating—issue in 3D printing. Here's every first layer problem, what causes it, and how to fix it.
Problem: No adhesion (print won't stick) Causes:
- Bed not level (one corner too high)
- Bed too cold
- Bed surface dirty (oil, dust, old residue)
- Filament wet Fix: Level bed, set to 50–60 °C, wipe bed with IPA, dry filament at 50 °C.
Problem: Elephant's foot (bulging base) Causes:
- First layer too close to bed
- Bed too hot
- Over-extrusion Fix: Raise first layer height to 0.24–0.28 mm, lower bed to 50 °C, reduce first layer flow to 100%.
Problem: Gaps in first layer Causes:
- Nozzle too high (not enough squish)
- Under-extrusion (flow too low)
- Clogged nozzle Fix: Lower nozzle slightly, increase flow to 105–110%, clean nozzle with cold pull.
Problem: First layer stringing Causes:
- Temperature too high
- Wet filament
- Retraction not set Fix: Lower to 195–205 °C, dry filament, set retraction properly.
Problem: First layer too thin / lines not joined Causes:
- Nozzle too high
- Flow too low
- Speed too fast Fix: Lower nozzle, increase flow, slow to 20–30 mm/s for first layer.
Problem: First layer peeling off bed mid-print Causes:
- Draft hitting the print
- Bed too cold
- No brim for large prints Fix: Block drafts, raise bed to 60 °C, add brim.
The universal first layer checklist
- Bed clean (IPA wiped)
- Bed level (paper test at all corners)
- Bed at 50–60 °C, preheated 3 minutes
- First layer at 20–30 mm/s
- First layer height = layer height × 1.2
- First layer flow = 105%
- Fan off for first 2–3 layers
- Filament dry and quality (1.75±0.03 mm)
If the first layer looks good, the rest of the print usually takes care of itself. Spend 5 minutes on first layer settings and save hours of failed prints.
