PLA Spools: What to Do With Empty Ones
Share
That empty spool sitting in your corner is more useful than you think. Here's what to do with them instead of tossing them.
Reuse for filament The obvious one. Empty spools can be reloaded—but it's harder than it sounds. Winding 1 kg of filament evenly by hand is tedious. Most makers who do this use a DIY filament winder or drill-powered spool rewinder.
- Worth it if you buy filament in bulk
- Make sure the spool dimensions match your holder
- Label it clearly with color and opening date
3D printed projects
- Wall art: Arrange spools as geometric decor
- Cable organizer: Wind excess cable around an empty spool
- Flower pot: Add a bottom, fill with soil, and plant small succulents
- Thread spool: Store embroidery floss or craft thread
- Gift wrap: Use spools as unique packaging for small gifts
Kids' crafts
- Roller wheels for toy cars
- Decorative frames covered in paper or fabric
- Marble tracks stacked together
- Puppet heads (glue on googly eyes and fabric)
Practical uses
- Desk organizer: Stand pens and tools in spools
- Plant stand: Stack spools at different heights
- Paint organizer: Store small paint bottles upright
- Cord keeper: Wrap Christmas lights or extension cords
Recycle properly Most spools are plastic (PET or similar). Check for a recycling symbol. If your local program accepts that type, rinse and recycle. If not, check with local maker spaces—many reuse spools for student projects.
