Why 1kg Spools Are the Sweet Spot for Makers
Share
Filament comes in 250g, 500g, 1kg, and even 5kg spools. For most makers, 1 kg is the perfect size—and here's why.
Value per kilogram Smaller spools always cost more per gram. A 250g spool might seem cheap, but per kilogram it's often 30–50% more expensive. A 1kg spool gives you the best price-to-filament ratio without the bulk of a 5kg roll.
Enough filament, not too much One kilogram of 1.75mm PLA equals about 315 meters. That's enough for 15–20 medium projects or months of casual printing. You won't run out mid-print constantly, but you also won't be stuck with a single color for a year.
Freshness and variety A 1kg spool lasts 2–6 months for most makers—short enough that the filament stays fresh, long enough to be economical. With 12 colors available, you can build a useful palette without tying up hundreds of dollars in 5kg rolls.
Printer compatibility Most FDM printers are designed for 1kg spools. The spool holder, filament path, and extruder tension are all calibrated for this weight. 5kg spools often need aftermarket holders and can cause feeding issues due to their weight and inertia.
Less waste from color changes With 1kg, you can print a large project in one color without switching. Smaller spools force you to change colors mid-print or buy multiple rolls of the same color—both waste time and create purge waste.
