Why Vacuum-Sealed Filament Matters (And What Desiccant Does)
Share
Why does filament come vacuum-sealed with desiccant? Learn how packaging protects PLA from moisture and why you should keep the bag.
When you open a new spool, you'll find a sealed bag with a little packet. It looks like packaging filler—but it's actually protecting your print quality. Here's why.
PLA is hygroscopic "Hygroscopic" means it absorbs water from the air. PLA does this surprisingly fast—in just a few days of open storage in humid conditions, it absorbs enough moisture to cause popping, stringing, and weak layers.
What vacuum sealing does A tight vacuum seal removes most of the air—and most of the moisture—around the spool. Until you open the bag, your filament stays as dry as the day it left the factory. This is why fresh spools print better than ones that sat on a warehouse shelf.
What the desiccant packet does That little silica gel pack absorbs any remaining moisture inside the bag. Even in a vacuum-sealed bag, trace humidity exists. The desiccant soaks it up, keeping the filament dry for months.
What happens when you skip both
- Filament absorbs moisture within days
- Popping sounds during printing
- Bubbly, rough surfaces
- Stringing that retraction can't fix
- Weak layer adhesion
- Random clogs
It's not dramatic at first. You might not notice for 2–3 prints. Then suddenly everything prints poorly and you don't know why.
How to use the packaging right
- Keep the original bag after opening
- Keep the desiccant packet (recharge it in the oven if it gets saturated)
- Re-seal the bag between prints
- Use a clip or heat sealer to close it tightly
- If the desiccant turns pink/clear, recharge it at 100–120 °C for 4 hours
The bottom line Cheap filament brands save money by shipping in cheap bags with no desiccant. You pay less upfront, but you pay in failed prints and drying time.
Every Arkforge PLA spool arrives vacuum-sealed with fresh desiccant—ready to print right out of the bag, and dry until you're ready to use it.
